What every family should know before moving abroad

By Bruno Sanchez-Andrade Nuno ยท

Relocation guides love to talk about visas, shipping containers, and school enrollment deadlines. Those things matter, but they are not what keeps expat parents up at night.

Here is what actually matters when you move abroad with kids.

Your children will grieve. Even toddlers feel the loss of familiar places, faces, and routines. Give them language for it and time to adjust.

The first three months are not real life. Everything feels exciting or terrible. Reserve judgment about your new home until month six.

School choice is the single biggest decision. It affects your child's language development, friend group, and cultural identity. Visit in person if you possibly can.

Healthcare logistics matter more than quality. Most developed countries have excellent medical care. What varies is how you access it -- insurance, referrals, emergency protocols. Learn the system before you need it.

Your partner's happiness predicts yours. Research shows the trailing spouse's adjustment is the strongest predictor of a successful relocation. Invest in their transition.

Local language changes everything. Even basic proficiency transforms your family's experience. Start before you move.

Build your village early. Join parent groups, attend school events, say yes to every invitation for the first year.

Document everything. Your kids will want to remember this chapter of their lives. Photos, journals, collected ticket stubs -- it all matters.

Moving abroad with children is one of the most challenging and rewarding things a family can do. Preparation helps, but flexibility matters more.
