Top 10 countries for expat families with toddlers

By Bruno Sanchez-Andrade Nuno ยท

Moving abroad with a toddler is a big leap. You want safety, good healthcare, welcoming communities, and ideally a culture that genuinely loves little kids.

After analyzing data from UNICEF, the OECD, and interviews with dozens of expat families, these ten countries consistently rise to the top.

1. Denmark -- Between forest kindergartens and a culture that lets babies nap outside in prams, Denmark treats childhood as sacred.

2. Netherlands -- Flat, bikeable, and famously relaxed about parenting. Dutch kids are regularly rated the happiest in the world.

3. Sweden -- 480 days of shared parental leave and universal preschool from age one.

4. Norway -- Outdoor culture, generous family benefits, and some of the safest cities on earth.

5. Germany -- Kita culture starts early, and cities like Berlin are surprisingly affordable for families.

6. New Zealand -- English-speaking, nature-rich, and with a strong early childhood education system.

7. Canada -- Multicultural, safe, and with improving childcare options in most provinces.

8. Australia -- Outdoor lifestyle, excellent healthcare, and a laid-back parenting culture.

9. Japan -- Incredibly safe, clean, and with a deep cultural respect for young children.

10. Singapore -- World-class healthcare, excellent safety, and a booming expat family community.
